Vespers - a Gathering of Spirit

Join the Men of UCM

Welcome to Universal Church of the Master

Since 1908 Universal Church of the Master (UCM) has nurtured development, encouraging people to use their innate spiritual gifts. Dogmatic teachings may limit individual growth; we therefore encourage spiritual activities for the enhancement and support furthering spiritual awareness.

A primary focus of UCM is to provide education and support for individual ministers to practice within legal boundaries while remaining connected to Holy Spirit. They make manifest in the world an alternative for those individuals resistant to rigid dogma and practices but who are alive to compassionate awareness, to the continuity of life, love and the connections between worlds.

Each person travels their own path in the light, but connecting to other groups and individuals with similar paths is helpful.

We provide an environment which supports communication and companionship for individuals who are committed to service, growth and enhancing their personal journey.

Please feel free to explore our web site for more information about our organization.

Our Invitation

  • At UCM we welcome our entire community, beyond church services. Hundreds of adults and children from around the world join together to learn, to heal, to serve, and to grow spiritually.  We strive to share the gift of abundant life with every person in our community, so that lives may be transformed through Spirit.
  • At UCM we value the warm fellowship Spirit provides, to build authentic, caring relationships in our increasingly disconnected world. We share meals together, we gather in fellowships, retreats and Community Groups. We value the belonging with unconditional love that Spirit provides each of us.
  • At UCM you’ll find us serving with a loving heart wherever we may be. We volunteer in many different capacities and support different charities through our local ministers and charters.  We appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate the significant love Spirit has given us and we find joy in giving back in gratitude.
  • At UCM you will find many opportunities to equip yourself and others for abundant spiritual living. Please know that you are warmly invited and deeply cherished as a member of our family.
  • At UCM you will find a vibrant teaching and learning community that will equip and support you in a ministry practice. We also offer the opportunity to have your current metaphysical ministry legally and spiritually covered under the umbrella of a historic Church ministry.

Diversity is Essential for our Spiritual Growth

As a spiritual and educational community, we are dedicated to eliminating barriers that arise from race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, culture, religion, linguistic diversity, ability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, personality, learning styles, life experiences or other human characteristics.

Headquarters Highlight - Spring Issue:
Thoughts from the President

Hello Dear Members,

Welcome to the Summer Edition of UCM Headquarters Highlights!

When I was installed as President of UCM in December of 2015, I stated that our number one priority as ministers is our own spiritual development.  Otherwise, how can we inspire and guide others to their own spiritual growth?  From a position of inner strength and centeredness, we can best serve the tenets of UCM: that the spiritual light of God is within all things; that we are all connected and that our inner paths reveal God is everywhere present.

And you can feel the changes, the growth of UCM spiritually as we renew our focus and intent to serve the world community.

Word of mouth is the most powerful advertising there is!  Share the wealth of your UCM background; that you come from a 100+ year heritage from the largest spiritualist organization in the United States and that UCM is vigorous and thriving as a spiritual guiding light in this Golden Era of Inner Transformation.  You incarnated in this time, this major epoch of consciousness development, and chose the ministry to help lead others to the light.  Embrace your UCM roots and help others to see God’s light within themselves.

The UCM Annual Membership and Business Meeting was held on May 14th at the Center for Creative Living in San Jose where our theme was “The Power of Love . . to Heal Your Heart . . to Heal the Earth”.  The event was chaired by Rev. Mary Garry, who wrote a beautiful report that I sent out to you earlier.  Here is her report of the Annual Meeting.

Rev. Janet Childs gave the keynote address on “The Power of Love” and here is the YouTube video of her wonderful presentation.

As a result of the elections, we have four new Trustees: Rev. Dr. Ayleen Augustine, Rev. Deirdre Leighton, Rev. April Lussier, and Rev. Sean Imler.  Of seven board members, four are ‘new’ serving members!  This is indicative of the changing and evolving energies of our church!

New appointees are: Vice President, Rev. Mary Garry, Treasurer, Min. Bob Hostetter, Secretary, Rev. Carol Fitzgerald, and Advisor to the President, Rev. Debbie Uharriet.  Let us pray and alignfor their highest and greatest service to UCM for the benefit of all.  (See photo at bottom)

Among the decisions enacted at the May 13th board meeting was the decision to parcel out a part of our savings into four equal investments of $25,000 each to be placed in CD’s, 3 months apart.

New committees were formed:

Finance Committee, chaired by Rev. Mary Garry

Fast Track and Sponsorship Committee, chaired by Rev. Barbara Richmond.  In discussions with Rev. Barbara, we are focusing first on reviewing and improving the standards first, before focusing on the Fast Track.  The Sponsorship Standards would have three levels:

  • Student – requirements to be a minister
  • Sponsor – requirements to qualify as a Sponsor
  • Board – requirements, implementation strategies and approval of qualified sponsors

Standards and Procedures Committee.  Rev. Mary Garry reported her progress at the May board meeting to standardize and create procedures for administrative tasks.  Part of the emphasis is continuity of work in the office and visibility of the various administrative responsibilities.

Education of our ministers and community is one of my top priorities, as you know.  We have such a treasure trove of experienced ministers – I want to tap into that wisdom base and make it available to all our ministers and the public.

There is now an Education Page on the UCM Website that shows the calendar of our Tuesday Evening Lecture series (2nd Tuesday of month), including recordings of past lectures that are publicly available.  A UCM YouTube page has been created and we continue to upload more content online, so that ministers and public, wherever you may be can access this wonderful knowledge base of lectures and programs.  Included is the recent lecture by Rev. Doti Boon on “Dance with Your Totem Animals”.

We will be uploading more and more content online, so that all our ministers have access to teachings and events.

More programs and events are being created, so stay attuned!

Attend or listen to (online) eight (8) or more lectures and you will receive a Certificate in Spiritual Studies!  If you do so online, just let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call the office and we will log in your progress.

Vespers: “A Gathering of Spirit” continues the fourth Tuesday of each month, facilitated by Rev’s Lynn Rogers and Kris Miller, with occasional hosts Rev’s Tom and Mary Garry.

A new evening program “Creating Sacred Space” starts on Thursday, July 21 at UCM HQ, hosted by Min. Bob Hostetter, our new Treasurer, and will continue on every 3rd Thursday.

It is my honor to work with you, helping UCM to flourish as a light to inspire and help guide people to their inner spiritual growth and flowering.

As always, if you have a question, concern, creative inspiration, please do let me know.  We are all here together, as one spiritual family!  Have a wonderful summer!

From my Heart, Blessings,

Rev. Richard Jelusich, Ph.D.

DYING (AND LIVING!) OUTSIDE THE BOX! - Rev. Carol Fitzgerald

Join Carol for a gentle introduction exploring THE subject most of us want to avoid, until we can’tcarol fitzgerald.
The process of dying, even if it’s an unexpected death, is complex, and has important choice points at every turn. Review of one’s values, aversions, preferences, and assumed needs, in advance of “our time”, is a most challenging process.
Preparing for one’s eventual death, though at times intense, is actually freeing and empowering. It is also a gift for our loved ones, to take responsibility for critical decisions regarding our own health and spiritual needs.

In addition to covering issues important to participants, Carol will present an overview (supported by info handouts) of the following key areas to be considered in preparing for death:

Ethical wills
Advanced Health Directives
Review of Values Assessment indicating our current top preferences and aversions
Spiritual needs and preferences
Bucket List
Regrets/Forgiveness-letters to loved ones?
Review possible options for care of the body following death.
Choices for disposal of body

From an early age, Rev. Carol Fitzgerald has had an understanding and intimate relationship with the complex and mysterious forces that are at the heart of one of Life’s profound absolutes; Dying and Death. She has been privileged to personally and professionally attend others through the intimate journey of their the dying process.
She has officiated funerals and memorials for over 30 years.
Carol is just completing the facilitation of A Year To Live group based on the teachings of the late Stephen Levine, in which the participants live a year supporting one another in exploring and preparing for their death at year’s end.

Center for Creative Living, Looking for a spiritual community to grow with? Come Home to the Center for Creative Living!
The Center for Creative Living, a charter under the Universal Church of the Master encourages each person to find their connection to their "Inner Master" (the aspect of Creator/God that lives within them as they envision that consciousness). CCL is a spiritualist church that proclaims and affirms the spiritual nature of all faiths, religions and creeds.
Join us every Sunday from 10:00am to 11:30am for a unique experience of spiritual fellowship and loving community. Each gathering will focus on a different topic related to transformation and empowerment through a deepened and more profound relationship with Spirit, honoring how each individual percieves that consciousness. We also provide "healing chairs" before the services where experienced energetic healers offer their assistance to any who ask. Please stay to enjoy a community feast after the service!
In addition to the Sunday services, CCL provides classes and group gatherings throughout the week that can motivate and encourage you as you navigate the sometimes turbulent river of your spiritual path. A variety of healers have offices here at the Center so feel free to ask if you have a special need or concern. We feature psychic and spiritual counseling, massage, chiropractic care, energetic healing, yoga and Ayurvedic counseling to name a few of the services available.
Have a group that needs a meeting place? Ask about rental rates for our sanctuary!
Our vision is to co-create spiritual communities of love, trust integrity and mutual respect which embraces our diversity, celebrates the oneness of the human spirit, serve the well-being of the human family and honor the sanctity of all creation. It basically eliminates the need for analysis, painful emotional experiences, years of therapy or growth groups and unfruitful meditations. It usually takes the user into an expanded state of consciousness. Universal Love is experienced as a reality and not as an unreachable concept. These is a deep connection to the Universal Intelligence - Source - God.
* The Rev. Deirdre Leighton also offers a book study of The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ - with ministerial students and the general public in my home Thursdays at 2:30 pm.

Welcome to the UCM Book Nook with Rev. Doti Boon
Each quarter I will be reviewing books I have read and enjoyed. These are books you want to snuggle with on a soft sofa, hold in your hand when you go to the kitchen and peer into the refrigerator, read in the sun next to the ocean, pull out of your tote when you are on an airplane and because of it, experience a much shorter flight:

Book Review:  "GRACE (EVENTUALLY) Thoughts on Faith" - by Anne Lamott.   Book Corner - Rev. Doti Boon
I don't know if I love this book more for the fact that Anne Lamott is such an excellent writer, and faith seeker or for the fact she is a resident of Marin County, California. But whatever it is - I had my eyes, my heart and my spirit opened by this incredible author.
All through this book I found myself laughing out loud at her self-deprecating humorous accounts of her life.  Whether she was hanging on by her fingernails, praying for grace, asking for forgiveness or reminding herself and her readers that God is always there - she is delightful.   Anne is constantly challenged by the same issues I have found paramount in my life, world peace, bad hair, screwy people, how to raise kids, deal with relationships. and how to best communicate with the Divine.
When I finished this book I wanted to invite Anne Lamott over for a cup of tea and sit in my living room for hours becoming her best friend.

One of my favorite quotes from the book:
When we have children, we know they will need us, but we don't have a clue how hard it is going to be.  We also can't understand when we're pregnant how profound and dicey it is to have a shared history with a child, shared blood, shared genes, even humor.  It means we are actually here on earth, for a time, like the Egyptians with their pyramids, but with kids, it's an experiment: you want to see what will come of it, and with people, that almost always means a mess."

  Love and Light,
     Doti

What We Teach and Practice

The Universal Church of the Master does not have a traditional "statement of faith or creed" that members are required to adhere to. The reason is that UCM has a profound respect for the individualized nature of spiritual development within each human person. The Rev. Dr. Lavona Stillman, 7th president of UCM, was fond of saying: "UCM does not have TESTS of Faith, we have TESTIMONIES of Faith."

We also have SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES which serve as a touchstone that offers unity in an often confusing landscape of spiritual options. The wonderful thing about the SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES is how they developed. The Rev. Dr. Byron J. Fitzgerald, 2nd president of the Universal Church of the Master, after completing an exhaustive study of the world's religions, found that every life giving faith, when distilled down to their common elements, had these timeless SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES in common. He wrote about them in our denominational textbook, "A New Text of Spiritual Philosophy and Religion." These timeless SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES are written here in updated language. (The original text follows.)
